Unwrapping Finish & Texturing

William Marshall

Intro
Following on from my most recent blog posts, I have successfully completed all of the unwrapping required for the Mech and placed it on the appropriate texture sets. The texturing process has also begun.

Unwrapped Texture Sets

These images demonstrate the different texture sets that have been used for different sections of the Mech. Such as the arms, body, legs and additional parts. In my previous blog post - I explained the benefits of breaking up different parts of the Mech like this, for presentation and efficiency purposes.

Substance Painter Texturing

Once the unwrapping was completed, I took the completed model into Substance Painter for texturing, detailing, painting and presentation.

Starting off, I placed the Mech into the scene and baked out all of the necessary maps, which were baked at 4k with 2x antialiasing.

Next, I added some basic weathering and metal prep onto the white model - and applied a standard camo texture to be applied over the top, which served as the base colour for the Mech (for now.)

Next Blog Post - 2nd February

By the next Blog Post, I aim to add more texturing onto the Mech and some more fine-painted details for additional interest.

Unwrapping Process & Material Assignment

William Marshall

Intro
At the start of this New Year, I have been spending the Christmas Holidays to make good progress on the unwrapping process for this Mech.

Unwrapping Pieces

I decided to split my entire Mech up into three separate parts for a few different reasons, such as:
  • Texture Resolution - Each texture set will be 4096x4096, keeping a good quality resolution over the entire model.
  • Efficiency - Parts of the Mech are now sorted by their material, such as the legs, torso and arms.
  • Easier Management
  • Easier Workflow - In Substance Painter, I'll be able to fine-tune certain sections of the Mech, rather than the entirety.
Each part of the Mech has been placed into the corresponding texture set, which has all of the benefits that are listed above.

The unwrapping process was surprisingly simple, it just took a long amount of time due to the multiple objects making up the Mech itself.

Next Blog Post - 19th January

By the next Blog Post, I intend to have the Mech fully unwrapped and prepared for texturing.
