FMP Week 11 - 8th December
Presentation #2, Dissertation and Updates
William Marshall
Intro
Heading into Christmas has marked the 11th week of my FMP, which has seen further improvements - as well as an additional presentation and a renewed focus on my Dissertation.
Blueprint Updates
Ever since the creation of the Rotary Mk2 & Mk3, my Mech has changed dramatically from my first version. As such, I decided to re-create the original blueprints that I created to fit this new model. Using 3D Renders, I was able to convert each image into black lineart/2D images by applying an artistic filter in Photoshop, rather than manually drawing each line of the Mech. It follows the same themes as the original blueprint. However, in order to make it look more authentic and immersive, I responded to feedback from my supervisor and applied a white overlay to make them look more hand-drawn.
Presentation #2
This week also contained the second of the presentations that take place during this entire project. I decided to demonstrate my willingness to listen to feedback from my first presentation by:
- Including Intended Completions to each of the assets
- Demonstrating Engine work
- Bulking up the Mech
- Demonstrating more work rather than planning
I received very positive feedback from this presentation, with my supervisor claiming it was faultless. This was a wonderful morale boost - but it doesn't leave me with a lot of areas to improve.
Dissertation
In order to demonstrate that I had not been neglecting my Dissertation, I decided to show all of my research and draft work so far. I outlined the title, aims, questions and reasons for focusing on my particular historical topic.
My research focused on gathering all of the examples of Mech-based Video Games as I possibly could, starting all the way back to 1989 with MechWarrior - which funnily enough ends with MechWarrior 5 in 2019. The publishers and platforms were also gathered in order to demonstrate technological evolution over time.
Finally, I demonstrated my Abstract. However, based on the feedback that I've received, this will likely be turned into my Intro rather than Abstract - as Abstracts tend to be completed as the very final part of the dissertation.
Texturing Example
In my previous blog post, I stated that I wanted to demonstrate some examples of texturing for a glimpse into the future. However, rather than working on an environmental asset - I decided to begin unwrapping the Rotary fully and texturing small pieces to give that example.
I used Substance Painter and a variety of layers, materials and even a trim sheet to give me these desired results.

Next Blog Post - 22nd December
For the next Blog Post on the 22nd of December - I will be intending to demonstrate how the unwrapping process for the Rotary is going, as well as developing my Dissertation even more.
